It said it couldn't repair disk. I exited out now it goes up to the Apple logo then shuts down.

Sounds like the hard drive may be failing or have already failed. What version of OS X are you running? Do you have a backup?

What was happening before running Onyx?

It has been running slow lately. I'm waiting for my new ssd to come in the mail. I was browsing the forum and saw something about Onyx. I ran Onyx and it said to reboot command R and run disc repair. After exiting it wont boot. Maybe its not pointing to the hdd to boot?

As others have said...could be the HD failing. Thread title made it sound like running Onyx was the issue...and it really shouldn't be Onyx. Probably the HD.

A very good idea to run Onyx first...just incase there was a software issue.:) But if the issue is hardware...Onyx can't fix that.

If Onyx said to run disk repair, the drive is dying or has died. You didn't say if you tried the CMD+R boot. Sometimes even with a dead/dying HD the recovery system will still boot.

BTW, running slowly is a symptom of a dying HD. Particularly if it starts suddenly and you haven't done any other things to change it.

Before running Onyx I was able to use the computer.
When I boot with 'Command R' I get disk utility.

And what happens when you run disk utility and try to repair the drive?

It says it repaired it. I erased the drive. When I get to the point that says select the disk where you want to install OSX, the hdd says it has S.M.A.R.T. errors.

I'm waiting for my new ssd to come in the mail. I was browsing the forum and saw something about Onyx.

If you've got that SSD kit coming from OWC...you've already erased the current HD...and still have errors/issues. "Forget-about-it". As an example...I've got guys in my area selling good used 500gig HD's for $15 bucks. And 500gig HD's can be purchased from Newegg for as little as $19.99. Just toss the drive when you remove it...and install the SSD.

Personally I wouldn't invest anymore time with it. Really not worth the effort.:)

I installed the hardware and I'm loading El Capitan. It seems to have stopped at 1 second remaining " preparing to install. Your computer will restart automatically"

Give it a a while. The installer seems to get stuck at that 1 second point. I seem to remember waiting 15 minutes or so.

Ok thanks. While I'm waiting, the OWC video shows a HDD, I'm assuming that the temperature sensor is placed on the SSD the same way.

I don't think so. It may not make a difference, but the two technologies are very different and generate different amounts of heat. I seem to recall the you need a certain cable that OWC provided if you swapped out a drive in an iMac, but I'm not sure which models required that, if my memory is correct. In any event, the two are not the same. You might call OWC tech support and ask them. They are pretty good.

I now says " an error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

I installed the hardware...

How did the install of the hardware go...including the special cable? We have someone else on Mac-Forums doing the same install (with an HD rather than SSD) with the special cable...and they seem to be having some trouble (didn't get as far as you...doing the OS install).
