wireless keyboard and trackpad

Do you have to turn off the wireless keyboard and trackpad when you turn off your iMac or will shutting down turn them off. I have been turning them off before shutting down thinking I will save on batteries.

I've not tested it since the mid 90s - about as soon as wireless keyboards and mice came out. I have never turned them off since. If the batteries didn't last for several "months" at a time, I might reconsider. My computers never get "turned off" either. Not sure I've ever met anyone that turned off their keyboard.
