If you clone the internal drive to an external, using say Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper it will be bootable meaning you can start up from it, choosing it in System Preferences > Startup Disk under Users & Groups. As I said boot from that, go to Disk Utility, choose the internal drive and erase.

Yosemite was on a usb drive. I copied from that onto my desktop. Now can I copy that to my hard drive and then install it from there?

Who knows. Where did the Yosemite USB come from? Not pirated I trust as it may have serious problems. You may try connecting the USB drive with Yosemite on it up, and see if you can start from it following my last thread.

The usb was simply an online download of the free Yosemite. How come I have to download from a hard drive and can't just install Yosemite directly from my desktop?

Wow!! That's sure a lot of extra work to accomplish what the original post from the OP asked, just to get it cleared and ready to "... turn it back into my employer before changing jobs and I want to be sure there are no passwords on it, no history of websites visited, and no old work."

And what's with all the Yosemite install stuff and how it came to be…???

Oh well.

There is a huge difference between downloaded Yosemite and the operating system having been installed. If you have an external drive, using cloning software to copy from the MB, boot (start up) from the external, go to Disk utility and jhit erase. End of story it will go back to the boss with a clean hard drive and no record of porn and game sites you have visited on his computer, nor your passwords.

Ummm...Are you saying that I can do what I proposed or I need some special kind of Yosemite (installed)? What's MB?

That's funny. Do people normally visit those kinds of sites on company computers?

Read my previous suggestions to answer your original question you posted as to how to "...turn it back into my employer before changing jobs and I want to be sure there are no passwords on it, no history of websites visited, and no old work."

And I guess I'm wondering why you're even doing anything with Yosemite with it as it sure didn't come with it installed when you received it from your company. And I'm also assuming from what you said that it was just a company "loaner" and you're leaving that company.

So this has been very confusing. Sorry I am not a techy and that's why I'm here. So again:

1. What is the difference between a downloaded Yosemite and other kinds?
2. If I put a downloaded Yosemite on a hard drive and then re-image my laptop with it will it wipe everything out?

How much time do you have to turn this computer back in to your company? We are now on day 4 and page 3 of this thread…with no end in site for getting this very basic task completed.

Ok..you may not be very "computer techy"…no problem.:) But you've been given very straight forward easy to follow instructions in this thread to accomplish what you want to do…and still we are no closer to getting the task done.:(

We have literally helped hundred's (maybe thousands) of folks over the years to accomplish exactly what you want to do.

My suggestion is. If what has been offered in this thread is still confusing. Then maybe visiting a local Apple Store…and seeing if they're willing to assist is the way to go.:)

Methinks you may be correct and some other things aren't making sense, and maybe there's not even a legit company with at least one computer savy IT person to help fix things on their??? loaned out Mac.

So a downloaded Yosemite from the internet saved to a hard drive won't work to erase everything?

How much will "restore" do? I think that's what I did last time I was in this situation. I know I didn't use any disc.

Hmmm…???

Just imaging that you just read your last post as another member here wanting to help, and I'll take a guess that not even you can really understand what it's about.

And I dare say considering that, plus all the previous comments and posts, I'll be surprised if there are any others other than this one, and this may just be the last from any member trying to help you and your "problem"???. :Lips-Are-Sealed:

I'm sorry, but I sure can't help you further. I'd just return the Mac to the employers you're about to leave and let them deal with the problem, if there really is one — which I somehow doubt somehow. :Smirk:

Not sure why nobody here can answer my direct questions, or even the one about restoring, but apparently the apple store will wipe it for me for free. Don't know why but I think it's worth going through the trouble.

And I think we have done all that we can do.
