Why external HD only on desktop after restart?

No problem getting files to my Sata ex HD but the icon only shows up on my desktop if I restart, a bit of a pain to do every time. EX HD doesn't show up in disk utility unless I restart. Any ideas? Thanks!

I think theres a problem with 10.4.10 update, that wont recognize external HDs.

Well, Ive noticed with a few of my drives, OSX seems to unmount the drive, and then won't remount it.

Sometimes the disk utility will remount the disks, sometimes not :(
