Who's good in Math Problems??

Hey guys! I was grounded for a week (yea that sucks!) so I wasn't able to log on for a while. Here's something to challenge bored people! Try to solve this and post!

A clever boy figured out a great way to catch fish in the Underwater Fishing Cavern. The first day she went fishing, she caught exactly 31416 pounds of fish!

Even though she had more fish than she knew what to do with, she decided to go fishing again the next day. And she caught exactly 40% of what she caught the day before. Which was still a lot of fish.

She continued fishing every day. And every day she caught exactly 40% of what she caught the previous day.

If she continued fishing every day for twenty years, how many pounds of fish, total, would she catch? Please round to the nearest pound.

It's been more than 2 months since I went to school... and my mind's currently dumb. It might seem easy for you here.

kman445, that's not the right equation, but a good try nonetheless. It's a series where each day is (0.4)^(day number) rather than 1.4^(total days).

novicew, I don't know how you came up with the number, and I don't know if it is right, but I'd guess the solution is in that range.

I just wrote a little python routine and...

31416*.40=12566.4
12566.4*.40=5026.56
5026.56*.40=2010.624 .....and so on for twenty years ?
i feel like i'm missing something

Exactly! That how much would be caught on each of the days. It quickly gets small. After 20 years, it goes down to some bloody small number. The question however asked for the total, which is 52360 lb.

It's a contrived starting point, but yes I noticed that. It would be more interesting if there were some relationship between the result, 52360 and some other "interesting" number.
