I searched and found nothing relating to this, but I was wondering:

Is the "whine" still an issue on the MacBook Pro when booted into Windows XP? This would be interesting if it just disappeared. Has anyone tried this out, or can anyone attest as to whether or not is an issue in WinXP? I plan to dual-boot this weekend if I get time, so I'll post my results, although my whine is EXTREMELY intermittent.

Thanks!

I was under the impression that the whine was a problem with Rev A motherboards. Why don't you call up Apple and demand a Rev D? I heard they'd fixed the common MacBook Pro problems with that one.

I have a Rev D... and the whine, though EXTREMELY rarely, still occurs from time to time. My serial is 8613, which falls into the Rev.D category. I was just curious just in general.

The 'cpu whine' disappears while booted into XP. This is based on my personal experience and also from what I have read on other forums/threads. The most logical reason that I have seen for this is that XP does not bring the CPU's into the same lowered power state as OSX, thus they work a bit harder in XP. The theory is that a light CPU load lessens or eliminates the 'whine'. This is proven when workarounds like the 'mirror widget' are used to reduce the whine. I have not seen any studies on battery life (XP vs. OSX) on MBP's, but that would also be interesting. Personally, my MBP always had a very slight whine, only audible if you put your head up to the keyboard. Since I don't generally compute with my head on the machine, it is not an issue here ;).
