I am new to the forums and to the digital editing world...but I have recently developed a desire to design my own docks, backgrounds, etc and I would like to know what software I should use or could use with spending the least amount of money as possible. Thanks for your help!

Maybe if it wasn't so massively over priced people would think twice about getting a dodgy copy.

If your lucky you can pick up a legitimate copy of photoshop CS2 or CS3 on eBay for £100.
(Is that legitimate? if it's not then I take it back.)

Is there a way of doing an anonymous survey to find out how many hooky programs people have?

Or you could buy alternatives like Pixelmator for $50.

I use Pixelmator myself, for what work I do with it. I have a close friend who does cartooning, too. Comic work mostly, and she uses it as well. We've yet to find something that it can't do. For designing Docks and other skins, Pixelmator will be absolutely fine. Photoshop is financial overkill, even at $100 for an old version which, I might add, won't be Intel-native and will run in Rosetta.

That's a one-way ticket to suck right there :)

Rulers? LOL Every graphics app I've seen has a ruler. CMYK support? I'm pretty sure, not like it matters. He's wanting to work on skinning and not publish. Layer groups, yes.

Is there a certain reason that you're being so aggressive about this? Do you work for Adobe?

+1 for Pixelmator

It is OSX native and is easier to use than Photoshop in my opinion.

The developers of Pixelmator are always making it better with updates. A new version will be coming out next year, too.

I don't work for anybody. Do you work for Pixelmator?

V1.1 of Pixelmator didn't have rulers, I was only asking for an update.

Have I been aggressive? If my comments have been mistaken for being aggressive then I apologise.

I'm going to join the Photoshop camp... been using it forever in various versions. CS 3 is intel native, I believe (was a unibin). That's what I use. My theming/skinning might speak for itself, as I've been in the game a little longer than some here, but yea. I'm sure Pixelmator would do fine, but I wouldn't pay for photo software that wasn't adobe. If I am paying for it, it better be pro grade. At least that's how I feel. :)

I know I'm going to get in trouble in some quarters for saying this, but GIMP is a perfect example of what, as a Mac user, I am NOT looking for. It's ugly, it's not fully functional, it's still not up to snuff after what, 20 years of development?

Sure its free, but if price were my primary concern wouldn't I be using Linux or Windows?

I'm a Mac user. I want professional-grade, high-quality apps that are highly functional and highly elegant, with a strong sense of UI and a low chance of problems. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to exude quality and craftsmanship.

Call me when you find a print shop or publisher that's thrown out Photoshop in favour of GIMP. Nuff said.

Getting back on topic.

"I would like to know what software I should use or could use with spending the least amount of money as possible"

free = the least amount of money

photoshop = a lot of money unless your a print shop or publisher
