The difference between the USB 3.0 and the Firewire 800 is speed of data transfer. To make it simple the USB 3.0 will be about twice as fast as the Firewire 800. Here is a link to a drive I resently purchased for our audio department: Amazon.com: G-Technology G-DRIVE (Gen 6) USB 3.0 eSATA and FireWire 2TB 7200RPM External Hard Drive (0G02919): Computers & Accessories It offers both connections so there is no need for choosing. As for quiet, truthfully, I have only set the drive up - I am the IT. I did notice it seems to make some noise when accessed but not more than light mechanical sounds when it spins up - not really noticeable. I will say it is bigger (longer) than I expected. I have a lot of external drives but this was my first GTech. I purchased it because our Audio person attended a training class that recommended them for reliability and speed. They do have a 3year warrantee. Lisa
