Is it better to buy it online or from say CompUSA and buy their protection plan?

it is best to buy from where the unit is cheapest (and the company is reliable) and buy apple care.

if you are a university student, inquire about mac discounts at the student bookstore/computer store. you can save there, but the tax might negate any edu discount savings.

You might want to look at those warehouses. Where they dont charge for tax and some no shipping.

check out this site, I posted it elsewhere but it is $100 cheaper than edu discount.
