It's a period of time when consumers can enjoy a temporary reduction or elimination of a tax. These holidays can affect income, property, value-added, and other taxes — but we're specifically referring to sales tax holidays here. Tax free weekends are for everybody! Even if you aren't shopping for a student, you can still pay no sales tax on must-haves like clothing, shoes, and electronics during your state's tax holiday. During the disaster prep tax holiday, consumers don't pay sales tax on batteries, fuel tanks, generators, radios, and more. The exact item list and price limits depend on the final version of legislation. Florida's Back to School tax holiday — if it occurs this year — will exempt bags, clothing, footwear, and wallets. Additionally, Florida will exempt school supplies like calculators, tape, poster board, and scissors. [h=3]When Is the Next Iowa Tax Free Weekend?[/h] Iowa has its tax free weekend on a Friday and Saturday, making it an odd state out. In 2020, the sales tax holiday goes from August 7 to August 8. Beware: If you show up for it on Sunday, you'll miss out. Consumers won't pay sales tax on clothing and footwear items that cost $100 or less. [h=3]What States Have No Sales Tax?[/h]For some shoppers, every day is a no-tax day! According to The Balance, "five states do not have a sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon." Of course, this doesn't mean you'll have an easier time calculating prices in no-tax states. Some state laws allow localities to charge sales taxes, for instance. And lots of states exempt food purchases from sales taxes. Unfortunately, many states have no sales tax holiday. Wisconsin stopped hosting these events last year, and Louisiana isn't having a state tax holiday through 2025 at least. This is slightly earlier than most states' tax free weekends. Mississippi will also host a Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday from August 28 to August 30. This holiday exempts firearms, ammunition, and a short list of hunting supplies — though any animals you might use while hunting aren't exempt. [h=3]Tax Holidays Aren't Always About School[/h]Not every tax free weekend is about stocking up for the new school year. Other tax holidays usually correspond to disaster preparedness or environmental awareness. These holidays take the sales tax off items like generators or Energy Star appliances. Some states even offer tax holidays for hunting supplies. Note that school supplies — including book bags — must cost $20 or less per item, and instructional supplies must also cost $20 or less. [h=3]Every Tax Free Weekend Is Different[/h]Know your local laws! Some states have strict exemption rules, only cutting sales tax on school supplies under $15, or clothing under $60. Other states might only exempt the first few dollars on a purchase. For example, a state might cut sales tax on backpacks, but only on the first $40 in the price. In these cases, you'll have to pay sales tax on the remainder of the purchase. Still other states don't place any price limit on clothing or school supply purchases.
