More than a dozen states have annual tax free weekends — also known as sales tax holidays. They give you the chance to buy Back to School essentials sans sales tax, and some states include Energy Star and disaster prep items, too.
Alabama's tax free weekend is the first one of the summer once again. While mid-July might feel like an early time to shop for school supplies, school is tentatively set to start in many AL counties just a few weeks later. Don't miss the chance to grab all the school year necessities now, so you can have one less thing to worry about.
[h=3]When Is the Next Alabama Tax Free Weekend in 2020?[/h] Alabama's Back to School Sales Tax Holiday is always the third full weekend in July. In 2020, that's July 17-19.
Alabama has two tax free weekends: one for Back to School and another for severe weather preparedness.
Alabama is one of the few states to have multiple sales tax holidays. Every February it hosts one for severe weather preparedness, and every July, it hosts another devoted to Back to School shopping. Watch for the former in February 2021, when you should be able to save on supplies like batteries, weather radios, generators, and more.
[h=3]What Items Qualify for Alabama Tax Free Shopping?[/h] Consumers won't have to pay state sales tax on a number of items during the Back to School weekend, specifically:

  • Clothing: $100 or less per item
  • Computers, software, and supplies: One purchase of $750 or less
  • School supplies: $50 or less per item
  • Books: $30 or less per item
Non–cell phone PDAs and handheld electronic schedulers are also tax exempt, provided you can find them anywhere.
For the full listing of exempt items, check out this PDF from the Alabama Department of Revenue.
[h=3]What Items Aren't Eligible for Alabama Tax Free Status?[/h] Not everything will be sales tax exempt during this event. For instance, exempt clothing is defined as "all human wearing apparel suitable for general use." Notably, this excludes accessories like belt buckles, jewelry, and watches; sports equipment and protective gear aren't eligible, either.

You'll also have to pay sales tax on a variety of computer-related items, including furniture, noneducational video games, and "any systems, devices, software, peripherals designed or intended primarily for recreational use."
[h=3]More Alabama Tax Holiday Tips[/h] Select AL localities don't participate in the tax holiday. Check this Back to School list to see which localities will take part. You can also check to see which localities will be participating in the Severe Weather Preparedness tax holiday in February; however, not all localities are listed on that page yet.
