This morning I was able to watch a movie full screen with no problems. This evening after downloading the update I tried the same thing and it tells me that I have to pay for that feature now. What's up with that?!?!

I did the same thing with the same results.
They are trying to make us buy it and not get it free, because the new upgrade nulls some of the features of the old one.
There is a disclaimer about this before you upgrade, but I did not see it ahead of time.
I definitely think it is bait and switch and should not be allowed.

When I used to run my older Mac with OS 8.6, QuickTime had a load of features but in later years most of them have been disabled in a bid to encourage users to upgrade to Pro. It is a bit iffy IMHO.

But really, most of what you need to achieve can be done with either 3rd Party free software or using the installed apps. To watch a DVD fullscreen for free is achievable in a myriad of ways.

Well if you update from quicktime 6 to quicktime 7, you'll lose the "pro" features, unless you purchase quicktime pro.

But if you are updating from quicktime 7 pro to a later version of quicktime 7 pro you shouldn't lose any features at all?

If you registered, check whether your details are still entered.
