God love ya Steve Jobs, I have been a loyal Mac customer since the IIGS, but you really screwed the pooch with the iPad. He could have made it amazing and spectacular but made it mediocre and lukewarm. It is simply a large iPhone, nothing more. I think Steve spent all of five minutes designing it. This was supposed to be for people who don't need the bulk of a full laptop and don't like the small screen of the iPhone right? Steve could have made jaws drop and pants bulge with the addition of these features: 1. Why isn't it a regular OSX Mac? Is it not compatible with the processor specifically created for it? It should have at an option for some sort of dual Snow Leopard OS X / iPhone setup for the user. 2. No built-in camera. It took Apple nine years to design an iPod with a camera. Maybe the 4th Generation iPad will have an amazing VGA camera if we're lucky. 3. Size. Why not make the screen the standard paper size: 8.5" x 11"? People would actually appreciate this because it is much more natural to use than the odd 9.6" x 7.5". 4. Ergonomics. Steve had to put it on his lap at the unveiling. Kind of awkward. Why not some sort of sleek handle design and have a built-in foldout stand for a table. 5. No USB whatsoever (or anything else for that matter). More of the dreaded and ridiculous 30-pin connector BS. 6. Built in keyboard. Quite frankly it is weird typing on a touch screen and there is no reassuring bump to know I pressed the right key. Yes it can be optional because of the touch screen but people still dig the keyboards. Instead the lame add-on. 7. Projector, projector, projector. I cannot stress how freaking awesome this would have been. There are many low-cost digital projectors on the market now that are putting out amazing pictures at good distances. If nothing else, Steve would have rocked the industry had he had the foresight to attach this to the iPad. 8. Removable battery and expandable HD. C'mon Steve, you can make them a weird and rare voltage so people can only buy from Apple but why not a freaking REMOVABLE BATTERY?! The HD I don't mind as much. He has his reasons for omitting things (3.5" disc drive on 1st Gen iMac) for the sake of style but the iPad made finally realize that Steve's legend has reached George Lucas-like proportions. Nobody around George had the courage to say anything even slightly critical during production (look at Episodes I, II, III of Star Wars). In the same way, Jobs has put way too much effort into styling and less into substance. However, he has revolutionized the computer industry and made beautiful machines. I held my tongue and opened my wallet when the 1st iMac came out and despite having to buy a new 3.5" disc drive, I enjoyed it. But Steve's egomaniacal reign of form over function may come crashing down. I wish Steve nothing but the best for his health, but I predict mediocre sales for the mediocre iPad. Apologies to the O.P., I got carried away.
