I am back leveled on the OS, to os 10.1.5. I have a my wifes copy of 10.3 legal
discs and want to upgrade the OS. Should I back up all my data and do a fresh install or upgrade. I know there are some HFS errors that can't be corrected cause the version of utility I have is not compatible with OS 10.1.5.

Also my entire cd collection has been ripped into iTunes can that be backed up as well ?

Not really knowing what to do and would like some suggestions. If I do not have need for classic appz or OS 9 appz how do I get the OS to upgrade w/o a clean install.

As you can see I am not staying currant and have paid for my sins.

The first thing you need to do is make complete back ups of all of your data and third party applications. Some one correct me if I am wrong; you will need to I believe is deauthor (?) your music in iTunes, that is if you have music from the iTunes Music Store. So that you can get control of your music when you restore is from back ups.

So to start I would back up everything as your system stands now. Next make the adjustments to the iTunes music library and back up everything up again.

If you have OS 9 on your system get a complete back up of it also, so you can restore it to your new envirnoment.

Not know to much about your system I can not same what the next step is. This is dependent on processor type biege G3 or the G4 systems.

So what is your system configuration?

Can you tell us more about the "HFS errors?" How were they discovered, and what exactly did it say?

If there are serious file system errors, and you can't repair them, you might need to reformat your HD to fix them before installing/upgrading anything. (And if you do need to reformat, then you will definitely need to back up all of your files and apps.)

I am in the process of backing up all data and .sit , hqx tar and dmg of appz installs that cannot be found on original cds. I do not have any iTunes purchases so the de-authorizing is not an issue. Nor iz OS 9 appz, they were the older versions of Photoshop and other appz my wife used before I was given the G4 iMac. I have OS X replacements for them. Received the HFS error when running Techtool and do no have a current ver CD that will repair it. Can't repair from the same disk running from.
