Two well known companies in the UK have recently suffered cyber attacks. We have accounts with both of them. Should we close our accounts or change passwords
if possible (one of them has had to close its online access and can’t process card payment).

From my reading, and having spoken with the "bosses" of one of these, I think that your Credit Cards are safe. You can use the Card for in-store purchases and for other (outside of the company) business.

The other thing to mention in passing, is that if your Card(s) was in any danger including passwords, the Media would have splashed this across the UK. There has been no mention of (a) not using the Cards and (b) changing your Passwords.

I'd say, sit tight, Personal opinion, of course;);)

I would, as a precaution, suggest changing your passwords. Even if it isn't recommended, it's prudent, IMHO.

Fair comment, Jake. I've not done that and so far had no trouble; but as you say "prudence prevails".

@Alwyn

You and others were right! M&S in the UK has admitted that customer Data WAS stolen. See here:

If this Link can't be opened (especially outside the UK), then here are the key points:

"Marks & Spencer has admitted that customer data was stolen in a cyber attack that has crippled the retailer.

The high street giant said it would be writing to customers on Tuesday to inform them that some of their personal data had been taken more than three weeks after it first confirmed the incident.

Stuart Machin, chief executive, said: “As we continue to manage the current cyber incident, we have written to customers today to let them know that unfortunately, some personal customer information has been taken.

“Importantly, there is no evidence that the information has been shared and it does not include useable card or payment details, or account passwords, so there is no need for customers to take any action.”

Despite the latter comment about no need to take action, some are saying that you should change your password - this is anecdotal, not "official".

Ian

Just received email from M&S. This is the only real important bit:

"Unfortunately, the nature of the incident means that some personal customer data has been taken, but there is no evidence that it has been shared. The personal data could include contact details, date of birth and online order history. However, importantly, the data does not include useable card or payment details, and it also does not include any account passwords. For more detail, see our FAQs."

Passwords apparently not affected

Hopefully this doesn't include Ocado, which is the only way you can shop for M&S food online? (The main M&S website isn't for food, strangely).

The only info I have re Ocado is in these Links:

As I understand it, it's much more a reduction in the ability of Ocado to deliver certain items?

I've had an Ocado order since Easter, but I did notice that quite a lot of items were 'out of stock' (luckily, almost none of the items I was ordering!) and this must have been caused by the attack. Worse with the Co-op though - I was in there Friday and there were so many empty shelves.
