I am new to the mac world, just preparing to purchase a PowerMac G5.
The monitors are too expensive for me at this time. Does anyone know of any alternative monitors that are compatible with MAC that they could recommend?? I would greatly appreciate any help/advice/feedback.

Thanks much!!!

Any monitor with a VGA (You will need a DVI-AVG converter) or a DVI cable will work fine

Thanks for the input. Do you know of any good name brands? I have been exploring Samsung and Sony... but really don't know which is the better quality for the price.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Low price, high quality: Compaq or HP. I've got the FP 7317, which is a 17" monitor. It looks nice, the quality is not the same as an Apple display, but it's pretty good, I'd defiantly say it's as good as a Sony.

Reviews point to Apple as the best LCD's, but since you don't want to go that route, your options are pretty open. You didn't mention if you want an LCD or CRT...

In the low end market of monitors, they all pretty much look the same, with a few exception. Go check out CNet and read their reviews. If you want a CRT, the Sony Trinitron can't be beat...

I agree with that. We've got a Dell branded Trinitron and it is amazing, despite being 4 years old.

Dell 2001FP, 20in LCD Supports 1600x1200 and has a response time of 16ms. It can usually be found on sale for around $700, sometimes as low as $609.

edit: it is $680 right now.

edit again: it uses a panel by LG Philips which is the same company Apple gets the panels for for their displays from.

Actually Apple uses Sharp LCD panels, so you could get one of them. However they are concentrating on the LCD TV market, so I'm not sure if you can get computer panels from them (and the TV's are expensive!!)

My 21" CRT Formac Trinitron monitor has been great for 4 years. But finally packed in. Doubled as a great heater too! But then it was on constantly, more or less. I thought it might've lasted a bit longer than 4 years really. Never mind - new 20" Cinema Display is really good - a bit too bright sometimes!
