Heyhey all,
This is my first post to this forum. I would like to say thanks for all the good info in here. I have looked and can't seem to find an answer to this problem I'm having. So here goes. Tell me what YOU think this is. I bought a used G4 dual 1.4 Mac that was known to not be working for really cheap. So I get his box home and do my checks. Looks like the last guy that had it broke a few pins from the motherboard connector for the processor. I shipped the MB and the CPU to a company in NorthCali for testing. They tested both pieces and concurred with me that the MB was bad and that the processors were still good. So I order a new motherboard for this thing (500 bucks). Get the motherboard and CPU back to the house. After installing everything again this is what I get. I hit the power button and it lights up and the fans and stuff start spinning like normal. So as soon as I take my finger off the power button the light goes off.. The system is still powered on but does not do anything (screen stays black) So after about 10 or 15 seconds the main fan in there goes into overdrive mode and the box just sits there humming away. Which is what it was doing before the new motherboard was installed, except that it would not stay on. After about 30 to 45 seconds of running in fan overdrive mode it would power itself off. I don't get any bells or buzzes or anything. I tried pressing and holding the PRAM button for 10 seconds to no avail. Something else that maybe of interest is the fact that if I take the mouse and connect it to the USB port on the keyboard the mouse will not light up, however if I unplug it and connect it to the USB port on the back of the machine it will light up like normal.
So I'm thinking its a busted power supply. What do you think? Any other ideas of stuff I can try? I'm a PC user but love OSX and am trying to make this change if I can get my new box to run for me. Thanks for any advice/comments.
