I have an imac 5.1 with OS 10.4.11. I will be upgrading my system to OS 10.6.8. I'd like to know what programs are good for backing up with the new system. Thanks in advance!

Time Machine works well under 10.6.8 but it doesn't produce a bootable backup. For that my favorite options are Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Both have versions for 10.6.8 so I suggest downloading them and see which you prefer.

Hold everything! Why not backup from OS X.4 first and migrate everything over?

From memory TM does not work on anything prior to Leopard so it will not backup Tiger. Will need something to backup Tiger and not Snow Leopard (yet anyway). To use SuperDuper make sure you get the older version 2.7.1.

Thanks for the suggestions. At present I have an External Drive that I back up to using BounceBack. May be some problems with BounceBack, I'm not sure, my files are backed up. A little nervous to change OS's but 10.4.11 has become a hindrance when it comes to using the Internet. It seems that people who program it now don't do code that is always compatible with 10.4. Sometimes I just can't get the Internet at all.

I just downloaded and tried the older version of SuperDuper as you suggested, but it does not recognize my External Hard Drive that I back up my files to.

A "bootable backup" copies your files to another drive in such a way that in an emergency you could start your Mac from the backup drive. Here's an example of what I mean:

A few years ago I came home one day to discover that my Mac Pro tower had shut down and would not restart. Fortunately I had just made a bootable backup (a.k.a clone) a few days before). The computer booted from the external drive and ran well. This let me know that the computer itself was OK. A few days later I had time to test the internal drive and conclude that it was hosed.

Since it was still under warranty Apple shipped me a replacement drive and I was able to copy things to the new internal drive and boot from there. By the time I received a replacement drive a week had gone by due to my needing to find time to test it. With the bootable backup the total time lost was about 10 minutes -- the time it took to locate the external drive and boot from it to return to work and test the drive later as needed.

I'm having a related problem. Can't Back Up to LaCie external drive. When I connect it to the computer it runs for about 5 minutes then I get an error message saying 'device not properly put away', or something like this, and the icon disappears from the screen!
Am I supposed to put the LaCie icon in the trash every time I Back Up? It sounds contrary to wht I'm trying to do...but I must
BackUP my photos! Working on an iMac 10.6.8. I do the backup manually, opening LaCie window, and dropping folders from desktop to LaCie. Has worked well in the past.

Thanks for any suggestions to make this work. This is very important to me!

Personally always dismount and disconnect external after backup by as you say, dragging to Trash, or right click 'Eject'.

Thanks I'll try to use the LaCie for back-up again.
I am using Carbonite now but it takes up a lot of memory and slows the computer down terribly, and goes on any time the computer is on .

Am going to try another cloud Backup if I can't get the LaCie to work.

We're considering MacMate, a free cloud back-up.

Any experience with this program?

Thanks.
