My  watch had an update yesterday. It's now watchOS 6.1.1. I don't know what's in it, Apple says security updates.

Apple seldom indicates what is specifically in the updates. My guess is that is because if people know what vulnerabilities exist in the older version, those who haven't updated can be exploited.

All updates that were received yesterday had to do with bug fixes and security. Even Mojave received a security update (#7).

According to 9to5Mac:

Apple is also releasing watchOS 6.1.1 to the public. This update does not include any new features for users, but it does offer performance improvements and bug fixes.

I did eventually find what was there at the end of a long chain of links, and all of it is to reduce vulnerabilities of various sorts.

My watch refuses to update. It just says “error during check for updates”.

It is the latest model of watch, with both watch and iPhone Xr fully charged and on mains power.

About all you can do is keep trying. It could be the server is down, or busy, or your internet connection is dodgy or you held your mouth the wrong way, or the moon is in Aquarius, or just about anything.

Solved this.

The watch needed to be unlocked before the iPhone could check for updates.

Still updating

Once it downloaded I had to unlock the watch again before it installed.

All done now
