VLC question on Mac?

Is there a way to set up movie files such as mpegs to play in the vlc player by just clicking the mpeg on the internet or do you have to download the the file to like the desktop before starting the movie in the player? Wow what a run on.

Well, while your downloading it, you can view part of it.. and you can set it as your default media player, but as for streaming a download, im not sure if its soo good at that.
