You can try mplayer and see it that makes a difference.

Well how about you post your computer specs so we know what you're working with?

I use VLC and have never had an issue with it. So the more information you give, the easier it will be to troubleshoot.

VLC hangs whenever I load a movie with it... it takes around 3-5 seconds before it starts playing even AFTER the app has fully loaded.

I switched to MPlayer and only miss an indicator that shows how long the movie is...

Funny, for me VLC works very reliably but MPlayer drops frames quite often...

VLC works fine for me too. The best all-purpose media player ever!

The downside to MPlayer is that I've heard they've stopped developing it.

I am pretty sure MPlayer is still under development. Maybe the OS X GUI release is abandonware but you can get the current release from the CVS branch of Fink. Of course then you are getting pretty heavily into geek zone.

Ah that's good to know. I had just read on MacUpdate that it was discontinued, but it sounds like it's not completely....

Yeah that was what I was talking about as perhaps an abandoned project. It is basically a Cocoa wrapper around mplayer. The Fink version is X11 based but more recent. I was not willing to set my Fink downloads up for the unstable branch to try it though.
