While I agree that most virus and malware applications such as Malwarebytes are mostly a waste of time, space, resources and money I and others have broadly recommended the free DetectX and Intego VirusBarrier Scanner for malware and PC virus content in email.
While the M Series Macs a very good at protecting themselves I still run an occasional check with VirusBarrier Scanner. On running it today (first time for about 9 months) I realised that it has a few new modifications, is very slow and pretty much maxed out 8 out of 10 of my CPU cores pushing the temp over 60C even with Macs Fan Controller running the twin fans at 5000+ rpm.
So I ran DetectX which took seconds only to provide the same result; No Threats Found.
This led me to wonder if there were any other worthwhile Malware/Virus scanners out there worth consideration.
Just for interest sake I tried out Bit Defender Virus Scanner and was pleasantly surprised. The free version is both lightweight and simple, easy to use UI with two options. A "quick" scan of locations most vulnerable and a "deep" scan which basically scans your whole Home folder.
Much faster than VirusBarrier Scanner (not as fast as DetectX) and much lighter on resources with a very simple interface I think it's a contender. Same result though; No Threats Found.
