In a sane non-COVID world, this would be the first weekend of the Jazz and Heritage Festival (a.k.a JazzFest) in New Orleans. Since circumstances make a live show impossible again this year, WWOZ is broadcasting content from previous editions of JazzFest. The broadcast runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7;00 p.m. US Central Time. The broadcast will continue tomorrow and Thursday thru Sunday of next week. I'm listening to WWOZ New Orleans' live streaming radio. Tune in to WWOZ now: http://www.wwoz.org/listen/player/

If the direct link does not work, look for the main stream and click play. There is also a pdf on the site with a list of upcoming acts.

Apologies for not posting this earlier.

Great stuff, Sly. Just spent the last 50 minutes or so listening to music I don't ordinarily associate with. Thanks for the Link. I like to have a go at new things - well, jazz is hardly new; but kind of new to me. (y) (y)

@ian:

You have to understand that Slydude is a native of Louisiana and rightly so loves Jazz because that's where Jazz originated:

According to Professor Wikipedia:

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime.

How right you are, Charlie.

Although often referred to as JazzFest, the event spotlights several different musical styles/genres. Tomorrow's lineup, for example, includes Mahalia Jackson, James Taylor, and Clifton Chenier (Zydeco).

I agree wholeheartedly.

He's one of several performers I would love to have seen in person but never had the opportunity. His Dixieland-style recordings were what got me interested in Jazz in the first place. To this day, I prefer Dixieland or Big Band to most other forms of Jazz.

One of the genres provided with the music channels broadcast on our TV cable is Big Band. They also have Jazz, and many other genres.

Cable costs have been going up but I would never give up those music channels. Great to listen to late in the evening and especially when nothing else good is on TV. :)

We used to have something similar until we dropped cable tv in favor of YouTube TV. I used to do exactly what you do. Now I either resort to Pandora or Apple Music (I've been experimenting with the free trial to see if I want to keep it).

All right, a bit late in the day, but regarding Satch, in a way, he was just too good; viz the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings. Also of course, his earlier stuff when he played with King Oliver. Because he had the talent, he could play exciting and interesting extended solos. Later he moved away from the ensemble playing of the earlier stuff. He almost became a part of the swing era. Later on he kind of returned to his roots by which time he was getting on and had lost a lot of his power - hence the singing. Shame.

Too many playing jazz today try to perform long and interesting solos. Many fail. It’s a result of his brilliance (when young) that they try. On reflection, it’s good that they try. Progress.

I have been a fan of his for a long time.

I know of at least one person who made essentially the same observation that you did. The thinking being that the singing developed in part because he no longer had the wind to do things that he could do earlier in his career. Having said that, I prefer the later material where he sings.That's a personal preference on my part because i've always been fascinated by the power of the human voice.
