no, you cant. you need special burning software like toast titanium. you can also use disk utillity. after DVD2OneX you have two foders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS, right? so you need to create folder and put those in. for compatibility issues use capitols and _ (instead of space) when naming the folder. open disk utility and images>new>from folder. locate and create image from your DVD foder, name it. you will have something like "I_ROBOT.dmg." for example. now this .dmg file should have appeared in you disk utility sidebar, with other disks. select it and click burn. thats it.
if you want to extract some clips from DVD you will need app called "cinematize", its not free. firs t you copy the DVD to your HDD with DVDbackup, then use cinematize to select and extract clips.

Flip, I cannot answer all of your questions because I use a PC for all of my DVD needs, but I can tell you that you can take movie stills from your DVDs. In fact, I asked this question myself only a couple of days ago! A kind soul directed me here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16324

where you can download DVD Capture, a little piece of software which allows you to take the capture and then either save it as a .pdf or .jpg straight on the Desktop or to your clipboard. I took stills from Sleepers today and it works easy-peasy. Thanks to rman for the link, I hope it helps you too!

I see, the deal is, disc manufacturers define that 1 GB on disc equals 1000MB. for the computer (because of binary language) 1 GB equals 1024 MB. so in fact when disc says it can hold 4.7 it in fact can hold only 4.3-4.4 GB. depends on the brand and weather its -R or +-R. -R has a bit more storage from my experience. if you try to get info about your .dmg and look at byte count, you'll see, that file its actually bigger then 4700000000 bytes that disc can hold

burning duds

G'day MAC-simus (and All),

I'm a mac newbie currently frustrated backing up DVD's for my kids.
I followed your instructions and created a disc from the resulting .dmg file (I used MTR to rip the original disc).

The resulting disc will not autoplay on my mac, but will play happily if I use DVDplayer, File/Open Folder and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder.

The disc refuses to play on a number of console DVD players (sony, pioneer and panasonic) as well.

Are there any other tricks I'm missing in this puzzle ?

Regards Mark

im pretty new to all of this too, but i have had lots of success in backing up dvds by using mac the ripper to rip the dvd, and then roxio popcorn (not free, but $50 isn't bad for how much i use it) to burn it to dvd. it has worked flawlessly for me thus far, maybe it is something that you would like to try.

Hi
I don't really know what to say.
if it plays plays on mac DVD player after navigating to VIDEO_TS, and not automatically, it may be your preferences. make sure that in CD/DVD preferences (inside system preferences) you have selected "open DVD player when you insert video DVD". it may solve auto-play issues.
I personally never had any problems with console playback. the problem can occur if the disc and player have different video standards. if say your
disc is PAL and the player NTSC. what else? sometimes using toast for burning may solve some incompatibility issues. if you use toast you don't need to create .dmg. you can just drag the movie folder (with VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS inside) and burn it as Data DVD-ROM.
I hope it helps
cheers

G'day All,

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I'll have to buy popcorn or toast.

Tha autoplay on DVDplayer is configured correctly, as original DVD's and backups made with Windows/DVDshrink autoplay without any problems.

G'day All,

Thanks all for the suggestions. I bought popcorn and have successfully backed up the kid flicks after ripping with MTR.

I thought I better update the thread .... better late than never.

Regards Mark
:)
