Use Mac to display Retro gaming console

Hi
I have got a small gaming console, that has a HDMI output, I would like to connect to my Mac and use the display , bought a HDMI to thunderbolt adapter,
But I cannot get it to work or should I say, show on my Mac display, is there a setting/settings, I need to change?? its a late 2014 model running Big Sur.

M1 Mac Studio, 11" iPad Pro 3rd Gen, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Watch Series 7, AirPods Pro
If you have an iMac, then no it will not work that way.
