All other USB drives I have work fine on the 2017 MBa. Sorry I forgot to mention that in my original post. I just went back to the 2017 MBa and tried another set of 6 USB drives, bot USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 from all different manufacturers and different capacities, 8 - 64 GB They all work fine in either port on the 2017 MBa. I then tried the "problem" USB drive, and it decides to mount as well. So - false alarm. On the older Macs I often had to plug in a USB drive two or three times before the Mac would recognize it. Didn't see this on the newer Macs we have, so I had forgotten about it. But all is good now. The fact that the problem drive didn't plug in all the way is a red herring - I had two of the latest test batch alsonot plug in completely but they mounted fine nevertheless.
