I have a MacBook Pro running Sierra (10.12.6) and I need to upgrade to Catalina (10.16.3). How do I do this?

Go to the App Store, find Catalina and then download the Installer. Once the download is complete, the installation will start automatically. You can stop this if you wish and do it at a later date.

Before you start the installation, make sure that you have an up to date back up. Once the installation is complete, the Installer will self delete. If you don't want this to happen, make a copy first.

Make sure your machine is able to run Catalina, if it's newer than 2013, then you should be all set.

You also might check to make sure, before you upgrade, that any application you really need is 64 bit as Catalina will not run 32 bit software at all.

As MightyGem said you can just quit the installer after you download it. It will launch once downloaded but if you quit it you will find it in your Application Folder where you can use it to instal Catalina ay any time. Some people like to save a copy of the installer which you can do at this point. If you run it immediately it will self delete after completion as stated.
If you want to check which apps you have (if you have any) that are 32bit the best way 299: How To Check For 32-Bit Apps (Before Upgrading to OS Catalina)

And an extremely trivial point: macOS Catalina is 10.15.x (not 10.16.x):)

I'd say that's a very critical point Ian, not a trivial point. :Smirk:

Patrick, it's kind of you to side with me on this.

But in relation to the OP's problem and the sensible suggestions already offered, pointing out a slight misspelling is hardly helping the OP who already knows it's called macOS Catalina.

I didn't want to come across as nit-picking or big-headed.O:)

You didn't Ian!!

Not everyone is careful about differentiating between version number and name, and both will be readily available in a few years and it would be so easy for someone to download the wrong version if it wasn't clarified properly.
