To give specific suggestions we need to know more about what Mac you will be upgrading. If your current installation is stable it could be as simple as booting from the Snow Leopard DVD and running the installer.

If you don't already have the DVD the easiest way to get it from Apple. It is currently on the Apple website for $19.99.

You mean 10.6 Snow leopard

I would back up your data (just a precaution)

Then just install Snow leopard (you can still buy it from the Apple store)

Do you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8)

assuming your mac can upgrade to Mountain Lion then yes you can upgrade, but what Mac do you have

And back up your stuff just in case and bear in mind that some older software may not work with 10.8

I'm sorry I'm sounding very confused, I know. I mean I want to upgrade to Lion 10.8. How would I do that from 10.5.8?

Assuming your Mac can run Mountain Lion (check the link in louishen's post) or post the info from About This Mac here for confirmation) then the upgrade path is as follows:

1. Purchase 10.6 (Snow Leopard) disc from Apple.
2. Install Snow Leopard when you receive the disc from Apple.
3. Run software update to make sure Snow Leopard is 100% current. This update will not cost anything. Be sure to reboot when everything is complete.
4. Launch the App Store application, You may need to create an account. From there you can select and download Mountain Lion. You can skip the Lion download. In fact it won't even show as an option.

Lion is 10.7

10.8 is Mountain Lion

I'm not ... hmm, lyin' is the wrong word, but lien is another word entirely.
