- 14" iBook G3 900/640/40 _ _ Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One 315/768/20 _ _ 20 GB iPod
I just thought I'd give an update for anyone who was interested in how my Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One was coming along. For those who aren't familiar with the G3 AIO, it was basically a Beige G3 with a built-in display. It was made for the education market, and is relatively rare because it was only produced for ~6 months. When I bought mine, it was 233 MHz, with 256 MB of RAM, 2 MB of video memory, and the standard 4.3 GB hard drive. It also came with OS 9.1.
My first mod was to clock it to 266 MHz using the jumpers, which is extremely easy. After reading that many people have gone to 300 MHz safely, I upped it once again, and now it's running trouble-free at 300 MHz.
I next picked up a 4 MB upgrade chip for the video memory on eBay for $7.00, to bring the total to 6 MB (the maximum for the stock card).
My brother had an older PC with a 20 GB HD that he wasn't using, so he let me swap it with the Mac's 4.3 GB. I've partitioned the new drive and installed Jaguar on one partition and OS 9 on the other.
So now I have a nice, second Mac that handles everything I use it for very well, and cost me less than $125 total. It's surprising how well it runs Jaguar (with a couple of minor known issues which I've learned to accept from a machine built in 1998), and I can boot into OS 9 if I ever want to. I'm also told the Beige G3's run Panther quite well too, though the installation requires an application called XPostFacto.
Well, I just wanted to let everyone know that these inexpensive machines are still very useful, and they can be found for great prices on eBay. It would be great to see these older Mac's go to good homes instead of being thrown out. And if anyone has any older all-in-one Mac models and has decided they don't want them anymore, please ask me before throwing them out. I'll be happy to adopt them.
Sorry about the long post - I'm just really happy with my new (old) Mac, and wanted to share.
