I have issues which perplex me, to the point where i assume a full wipe and reinstall is the only option, though first I'd like to know if anyone has ever experienced this and can offer some advice or even just reason why this happened.

first off, i have a 2001 (i think) emac with 800 mhz PPC G4 and 512 mb RAM that was previously running whatever came right before 10.4.11 (10.4.10?) with everything in it that it came with except i replaced the 60gb HDD to 320 gb, but that was long ago.

second, the events leading to the problems:
i upgraded iTunes to the current version in order to use the store. upon restarting, itunes would no longer start. in response, i deleted only the itunes in the applications folder, and reinstalled an older version. no luck. next, i followed the apple support site's ( Removing iTunes for Mac OS X ) advice, and deleted those files then reinstalled the newest version of itunes, which worked fine.
this doesnt have anything to do with the problem as far as i know, but i figured id mention it since the apple page had me deleting things out of places i normally dont venture near, so i figured id include it
thereafter, i decided to upgrade my computer to 10.4.11, which included upgrading safari to 4.0.4. i did this, and then immediately thereafter, several other updates became available in my software update screen. i installed those, too, since i was on a spree anyway. i dont remember exactly what ones i installed. after restarting thereafter i was faced with the problem i have now.

the problem: well, i dont know whats wrong, but here are a few of the symptoms that ive found:
the dock is missing and will not launch
many icons are missing and pressing where they would be works for some but not for many
the system preferences pane loads no pictures, just the text, and none are clickable to go to other panes
on login, no buttons work and my user picture does not appear
none of my expose or window switching shortcuts work
no click and drag at all
if i open an application (say preview, which is also missing its icons for zoom in, etc) then try to open another file in the same application via double click, finder returns an error (-600 error code)
almost no video formats play, even in VLC. only .mpeg (and not .mp4, .avi .mkv .wmv etc)
"About This Mac" button does nothing
"Sleep" and "Shut Down" do nothing
i cannot open any compressed files (.dmg .zip etc)

and im sure there are more that i havent found yet. please. if anyone might have the slightest idea whats going on, or went through something similar, please help

Before you do anything as drastic as format and install, download the combo updater for OS X.4.11 and install that and see if there is any improvement. Here is the link:-

Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X Updates - Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

Download to Download folder, disconnect any peripherals other than keyboard and mouse, run Repair Permissions, drag download to sesktop and run by double clicking and allow the machine to reboot in its own good time, may well be minutes.

Run Repair Permissions again. Keep us posted?

i just tried to do that. problem is... the update comes in a .dmg file. i cant open those. ill try through disk utilities maybe... disk utilities wont launch either. know any alternatives to those so that i can open the file? all the ones i found on the internet were only downloadable in .dmg format (d'oh!)

also, as disk utility wont open, i cant repair permissions. i have Onyx ( i think that can repair permissions as well) but it crashes immediately upon opening.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Insert your original tiger install disc.
Press power button, and immediately after startup chime press and hold the C key until you see the spinning gear icon.
After the machine has booted, pick your language, and when the Installer window appears, do not press Continue, but go to the Utilities menu in the menubar and open Disk Utility.
In Disk Utility, choose your normal startup volume in the pane on the left and then click Repair disk permissions.
Run it twice.
Quit Disk Utility, quit the installer and restart with your regular startup volume.
