Hi.

Ive pulled a Harddrive (500GB, seagate barracuda 7200.12) from a dead '2010 IMAC' that had old photos on.

Bought a SATA connection cable with 12volt power (USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter for 2.5"/3.5" HDD/SSD, BENFEI USB 3.0 to SATA III Hard Drive Disk Adapter with 12V/2A Power Adapter) from amazon.

Tried plugging this into a 2015 macbook pro and nothing is appearing in disk utility.

I can hear the drive spin up so power is running through to it.

Does anyone have an idea of a way of accessing it?

I thought perhaps the disk filing system is different on newer macs? or something along those lines? or is there some software that could see if theres anyway to see if i can get a connection.

Any thought are appreciated.

The file system should be irrelevant. If the drive and the adapter are all working properly, the drive would show up in Disk Utility and available to be reformatted, if nothing else. Since you see nothing, then either the drive is faulty; the adapter is faulty; or something isn't connected quite right. You are using the power adapter also, not just the SATA adapter, right?

Hi.
After what you wrote...
I restarted the computer.
Plugged the harddrive in with the sata usb cable (making sure the connection was snug), waited for the light to go on on the sata cable connection to go on (hadnt noticed this the first time).
Then plugged the 12v power supply into the sata connection. Heard HDD spin up.
Started DISK UTILITY.... and it showed up.
I pressed the Disk firstaid on the disk, and hey presto...it appeared on the desktop.

Thanks, Paul
