trouble deleting incoming mail

OS X 10.5.4
I have Apple Mail Version 3.6 (936)

I have trouble fully deleting my incoming mail, after reading it.
It changes to greyed-out text, but is still there.
What setting to I need to change?

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Preferences>accounts>,mailbox behaviours.
Make sure that last item, is checked, and that it doesn't have "never" selected.
