Transferring Apps and/or Programs

I have an iMac Intel w OS X 10.6.8. My start-up disk is full. Mostly with iTunes music & movies, and iPhoto images. How can I move the programs along with corresponding media to an external 2TB HDD, and still bring them up from said external HDD?
