xcode that comes with panther's developer disk is possibly the most thorough programming tool out there. most programming in college is done off linux boxes in terminal style stuff... mac will do just fine with that, its built off unix..

what language? and how advanced in that language are you?

Programming

I'm just getting into programming (studying in school).. Apparently based off the curriculum, I will need a PC for anything from file system management up to GUI  . The syllabus says a PC is required, so I need to get one by October.

I have a 1.2GHZ Celeron. It's a compaq, with I think..340MB ram, 20GB HD, came with Windows XP Home on it, but I deleted that and put Win 2k on it. The CD to get XP Home is $10.00. I'll order that for ya and install it if you want it. I also have a 17" CRT. Comes with Logitech Wireless mouse/keyboard. Some Altec-Lansing speakers and sub, 32MB AGP Radeon 7000 graphics card. It's not much, but for what you need, it might be good. I can throw in a few hundred bucks too. I already have that same iMac, but two side-by-side, ohhh yeah. Let me know if you're interested.

Have you considered virtual PC?, Version 7.0 is coming out soon (ms said it was to be released straight after sp2) and supposedly is quite a bit faster (close to 40% I think).

you'll probably need at least a 512 meg stick of ram though (I got virtual pc 6.1 on my laptop for some visuall C++.NET mums working on so she doesn't have to cart her work toshiba back and forth, windows runs comfortably with 256 megs of ram when compiling stuff) The performance is emulating aproximately a 3rd of the speed of your processor (My VPC runs at 400mhz, yours will probly run at 300mhz)

You could also use mono if you want, it can handle .NET code pretty well...

I would just check first that pc just doesn't mean personal computer rather than windows, sometimes everyone assumes pc is tied directly to Bill and his aspirations.

I don't think I would be willing to trade my PC for that but I might be willing to buy it if the price it right, let me know if you want to just sell it and how much.
