Hi.
I have been a PC person my whole life. I have been thinking about converting to the dark side but have hesitated. Now that the Macbook is out, I am seriously considering purchasing one.

I am a bit worried if it's too early in the game for this investment.

Are there any kinks to be worked out? Any updates... rumored release... soon in the future?

Thanks.

good idea, but it's not going over to the dark side, it's coming over from the light side.

About the macbook, i don't think there have been many problems or complaints but I would search around the macbook/ibook forum to see what there is. There are definitely less complaints/problems than there were about the MBP after it's release.

Congrats on deciding to convert!!!!!

Really the only MAJOR problem is the heat. But it seems that that is also starting to go away, people are reporting lower temperatures with some of the latest MacBooks.

It's really how you define a lot of complaints. I think there have been a lot of complaints around a few common themes. Some of the issues are listed below. Some being mentioned a lot more than others.
Heat (mentioned a lot)
"mooing" sounds (mentioned a lot)
Keys not working on the keyboard
body pieces not aligning properly
Not sitting flush on a hard surface

"accordingi2ime" keep in mind you will find more negative comments posted about a product than positive (sometimes). At the end of the day, some of these issues can be isolated incidences...

I personally held off purchasing a macbook until rev. b comes out... :p

I would wait on it until the next line of MacBooks come out. There is definitely a heat issue and hopefully they will have an option for a dedicated graphics card on revB.

It is all good here.

I got a MacBook (2.0/1g/80g) and I love it. It is no hotter than my iBook g4, and I have had no issues with the keyboard, trackpad, mooing, etc. The screen is great too!

I think there are definitely machines with issues, but that is typical with technology. Plus people tend to post with problems and not with praise. I knew that issues existed, but I was confident that I could get a quality machine.

Just an opinion.

After using PCs my whole life, I just bought my first Apple. A Macbook 1.8 with a 80GB drive, 2GB memory and a mighty mouse.

This thing is fantastic; I don't know why I waited so long. The bottom of the case does seem to get a little hot but it seems manageable and it has not shut down.

Good luck!

I am going to get the 2gig in black.

I am going to another ram and maybe upgrade hard to 100gig. Not sure if hard drive upgrade is worth the $. What do you guys think?

oh and what other peripharals and softwares should I get?

You are paying an extra $150 just to get it in black
-get 2 Gigs of ram if you can.
-I have heard a lot off people installing a 100gb 7200rpm drive. I stuck with the 80 GB
-Get the mighty mouse, it rocks! And download steermouse from appl.com
-get a good bag for it. Brenthaven is great.

good luck

hmm..I think i'm going to check out the mac mini as well.
do you guys know if apple is planning to use new core duo chips for the next macbook release? when is the next version: 'Rev. B' expected (any official estimates)?

EDIT: Also, why do so many mac users want 2GB of RAM??
while using windows, i upgraded my RAM to 1GB but it doesn't matter
much since my processor is still 1.4Ghz.

I plan on using this for Photoshop so extra memory will help with the large files. Unless you are really concerned with style, this is a better investment than pay $150 extra for a black one.

Since this will be my first mac, I don't have any programs for it. Not familiar with any of its program except itunes.

I am assuming I will have to buy ms office...
what are some common softwares that I should buy.
Virus protection, cd burner? and etc...

Yes, you do need either microsoft office or iWork, its hard to do much with out one of them. Unless you definately need 100% PC compatability, you might want to buy iWork because its cheaper, and wait until the Universal Binary of Office comes out. However, it still works fine under Rossetta.

Why would you need CD burning software or virus protection?
Virus's arn't a problem on a mac and all your burning needs come with your mac. Data burning right in your finder window, music in itunes, and movies in iDVD. If you need more advanced buring for some reason, Toast 7 is by far the best option.

That's something I wondered and asked in the Application forum...didn't get a clear answer. I wasn't as specific with my question as I should have been, though.

I'm a switcher too and basically I'm thinking I'll go with iWork.

But I need to be certain - will it save files to a jump disk easily that can be transferred to a PC and opened on a PC and printed off a PC without any sort of trouble?
