From Apple's Mac OS X page:

Tiger Requirements said:
Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
Built-in FireWire
DVD drive for installation
256MB of RAM
3GB of available hard disk space (4GB if you install the developer tools)

It's not clear what G3 you have exactly, but you can also check out the Firmware Update List on Apple's site as well:

so as long as you have a dvd rom and firewire built in you should be fine.

Here's an Apple doc with all the info about what firmware for which model: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117. There is a CD version of Tiger. You have to buy the DVD version and exchange it for the CD version directly from Apple. See the Apple site for details. The DVD drive is necessary only to install Tiger, not to run it later. I haven't done it myself but I understand you can use an external Firewire DVD drive to install Tiger.

1. IF you need to do a firmware update, you have to do it in OS 9, which means installing it on the HD.

2. There is a CD version of Tiger. See the Apple web site.

3. Booting from an external DVD...depends. Anybody?

You still haven't told us what G3 you have. iMac? B&W? Beige?(dont think that one came as fast as 500)

No, you can't. There is no way to update the video on an iMac.

I think you are missing the point. If your machine is on the 'needs firmware upgrade' list linked to earlier, then you cannot install Tiger until the firmware upgrade is done (first). You can only do this from OS9, which you must install before you do anything. Clear now? If you don't have OS9, you can get it cheaply on EBay.

Here's what you need to do.

1. Get OS 9 and Install It
2. Download the Firmware Update from Apple and Install It
3. Upgrade to Tiger

As long as you have the stats you said and a firewire port, you can go to Tiger. I don't know about the graphics card.
