Hi,,

I'm curious to ask --

Why is it when opening attachments in Thunderbird on a Mac its always downloaded to the desktop ( im not saving to disk, just opening within email client).

So i download stuff and save to documents, and everytime i open it in the email client its downloaded to the desktop --- am i missing something here .. something obvious ?

Hi there.

If you open Thunderbird click on Thunderbird from your menu bar (top of the screen) and choose Preferences (or key combination Command+,) Look for the Attachments tab and you should be able to dictate where attachments are downloaded to.

Does that answer your question or have I not understood what you're asking?

Hi,,

Thanks for your post , but its a slightly different thing ..

Its like this , when i get emails, and click on the attachment, you get the standard window (attached) to either open file or save to disk --- so lets say a PDF file, i click Open with Preview -- now wat happens is the PDF is downloaded to the desktop,, by clicking on Open-

In Windows, clicking on Open just opens the file within Thunderbird, and isnt downloaded. Clicking Save as downloads it to the desktop--

I just dont want to keep having to delete files i already have on my harddrive which replicate everytime i open from Thunderbird and appears on my desktop ...

Ah right - yes I've noticed that as well (just mine goes into my downloads folder) - not sure how to stop it.

However it should be pointed out that Windows also downloads the attachment - it's just with Windows there is at least one temp directory and any attachments or (PDFs on web pages for that matter) go into that directory - the idea is that this temp area should be cleared automatically for you usually at each boot up - however this is rarely the case and is usually cleaned up when you run the disc clean up wizzard or whatever it's called. (However with todays big hard drives few people use the disc cleaner as they rarely get the message about running out of space).

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to setup a downloads folder in your user area (like me) and set this as the default location for any attachments - that way you can just stop by every now and then and remove what you don't want - not really a good answer - but will keep things out of sight (out of mind) until you want to look for something or fancy some 'spring cleaning'.

Sorry I can't help - if you do find a better answer - please share ;)
