“… if you Restart they will be disconnected”.

I've had this message the last two times I've rebooted. Yet I'm the only active user! Could this message be due to the fact that in VirtualBox Mavericks, I've connected with me as host? It’s a strange message if so, because I save the VM (i.e. quit it) before I Restart.

How do you confirm no one else is logged into this Mac? Next time, sign out instead of Restart (Reboot). The other user, may be having an issue signing out.

.You mean log out of the User then log back in rather than Restart?

I mean log out of the "active" user you are logged into. Then when you get to the login window, it should show if others are logged in? Also, do you have Guest User enabled?

Apparently Guest is enabled but I never ever use it. I still think it may be something to do with the VM even though it’s in a ‘Saved' state rather than active.

Now that you are mentioning "saved state", you are probably correct. Only the VM software, knows it is in a saved state, if it was active when its was "saved", macOS still sees it as active.

Next time shut down the OS before you quit the VM app.

Are you running one version of macOS and then another version within Virtualbox? If you explain your setup a bit more, that'll help us understand what's happening..

Yes, or Save the VM and then Quit the VM app (VirtualBox) at which point the VM OS becomes invisible to the host?.

Yes - the host is High Sierra and the VM is Mavericks in VirtualBox (which I'm not very keen on, and am waiting for my eBay purchase of Parallels 15 to arrive from the US).

I think that is the proper way for the Mac, to not see the other OS version connections.

I think, given what has been said, both users are you.

Excuse my ignorance, especially regarding Mac and Parallels OS software, but isn't it just downloadable via the 'net?
ie: KB Parallels: Download links for legacy Parallels Desktop versions

It would certainly save any shipping wait.

Just thinking that might be quicker if it was possible.
Yes, you can certainly download archive versions of Parallels from their website, but you then have to activate it with a key, and Parallels won't sell anyone a key to an old version. The copy from eBay is a boxed version that includes a licence key, valid for 12 months.

Thanks to the update info MB, and what happens after 12 months?

I didn't realize the software had so many limitations but I guess those who need it realize what is needed, but luckily, I don't need to go there and never will.

I just thought it was readily and freely available, but obviously not.

No, Parallels are now the only VM company that aren’t free or don't have a free option. Unfortunately it’s now subscription software (renew after 12 months) which I vowed I would never use, but Parallels is something I can't live without. I do have VirtualBox (free) but it’s so clunky compared to the others.

I'm surprised to hear you say you'd never go there - I remember all the difficulties you encountered upgrading your OS; running a VM means you could have your old OS running within the new one for the things you can't or won't upgrade!.

I considered the thought for a while but abandoned the idea after reading more than enough user reviews of their problems when using it and I really didn't feel like adding any more to my problems time/

Anyway, I'm finally learning and finding out where all the features are hidden or hiding with Mac OS 15 and a few extra third-party utilities are helping fix some of Apple's poor software programming.

If I took notice of every negative review, I'd never buy anything, ever!.

In Case This Helps Figure It Out:
My OS that I had when I used Virtual Box for Windows & DOS virtual machines gave a similar message when I would click the computer to shut down. Quitting the virtual machine and virtual box before shutting the Mac down stopped it.

Note, however, that this was on a much older operating system than yours. (OS X 10.11.6 machine with Windows XP Pro, Windows 98 or MS DOS as the virtual machines.)

My wife has a computer using OS X 10.6.x and Virtual Box. She has to also shut the Virtual Box and the Windows down before quitting to avoid the message.

Paul
PS: For the little it is worth, I very much liked Virtual Box versus Parallels for its stability and zippiness. (Not to mention the zero cost.)

For fun, I tried a VM & OS X 10.6.11 so that I could run my old 32 bit applications on a Mac with Apple Silicon S.O.C. (M4)

It simply would not work. From my research, the best information I have is that Apple's S.O.C. architecture can't do 32 bit no matter what is presenting it.

You can grab VMWare Fusion 13 Professional and see if that works? I don't know if it will work for what you want to do, but now I have winOS 11 ARM on my M4 MBP.

You have to register for an account, with Broadcom, before you can access the free downloadable file. It's on this page.
