I know nothing about the inside components of the Macbook but in my hours and hours of research I've recently done on the subject I happened to come across a post from someone who had a spill and put their macbook in rice which somehow got into the keyboard and some of the side component slots as well which caused further problems, the poster stated in their frantic reaction to the spill they didn't remember to tape the openings. I was just about to try it prior to reading their post which made me reconsider. I just thought I'd mention it to you, I have no idea if it applies to your situation but it could be worth looking into, unless you took the right measures.
