The bluetooth symbol on my mac is now greyed out with a wavy line through it and it says bluetooth:not available when I click on it. My mac is a late 2009 edition with os x el capitan. I have been using bluetooth quite regularly recently as my I need it to transfer photos from my new phone to my mac.

Has anyone got any advice please is there perhaps a hidden tick box somewhere that somehow got unticked?

Reset the SMC/NVRAM/PRAM on the Mac. Boot into Safe mode. Try those two things and see what you see.

You haven't told us which Mac you have, but the first thing to try is a SMC reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

There are other ways to transfer your photos from your phone (assuming it's an iPhone) to your Mac. I usually use the "Airdrop" feature as it's fast and works well. Another method is to attach your iPhone to your Mac, open up the "Image Capture.app" on your Mac and do the transfer that way.

Let us know if we can be of more help.

Its a late 2009 imac 21.5 inch and its not an iphone but an android phone and as far as I can work out bluetooth is the only way to transfer files, but I tried the SMC reset and it worked so all's good! (Pretty sure I tried shutting it down before so who knew unplugging it would make a difference?) Thanks for the help.

Okay, glad you got it working. By the way, I believe you can use an Android app to transfer photos to your Mac. I'm not that all familiar with Android apps but there are other members who have used it. Here it is: Android File Transfer
