This whole matter is confusing. The OP implies he's texting with AOL (i.e. AIM), but that part of the service was shut down. AOL Instant Messenger is shutting down after 20 years – TechCrunch We really need some clarity here since he's saying "texting" but it may really be emailing. In the meanwhile, I'm doing a little digging and interestingly, you could text someone from the AOL Instant Messenger. iPhone & AOL Instant Messenger - Apple Community That discussion goes way back to 2007, but the person posting there said he set up AIM to send IMs to his cell number as an SMS. Still, since the Instant Messenger service was shut down 2 years ago, this literally shouldn't be working either. For a workaround to use AIM, there is a 3rd party hosting a server that restores functionality. It looks like you can use any official AIM client but have to change the server details and register an account with them. You also cannot import your existing buddy lists since they are a 3rd party.
