Text edit -- no recent files in "open recent' on menu

Just curious -- I'm writing java programs in text edit; yet whenever I open Text edit and go to open recent in the file menu nothing's there; just "clear menu"

Is there any way to get Text Edit to list he recent files that I've opened?

Change the Number of Files Shown in “Open Recent” Menu Items of OS X | OSXDaily

should still work up to Mavericks, but don't know if Yosemite changed things.

Also, if you have used any "cleaning" products, or used them incorrectly, this will often happen.

Thanks; that's what did it. My other third party apps like libreoffice were showing recent items; so that's why I was wondering about this.
