I want to learn more about this application, does anyone know of a web-site or book with a tutorial that is written for a lay person rather than some one with vast technical knowledge? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

There's a little book called The Unix Philosophy. I highly recommend it, because it'll explain to you in layman's terms WHY unix is the way it is, and once you understand that, everything else will fall into place. It's a great little book.
