I pasted the code for creating a USB drive for Yosemite into terminal and hit return. It asks for my password. I type and nothing happens. I click in the blinking box and then type again, to no avail. It just sits there blinking. I can't figure out what to do.

I'm using Mavericks on a MBP mid 2012 (non retina)

That is correct. In terminal the password is never displayed, not with asterisks or anything. Just type it in (carefully) and hit Return. It will be processed.
