I'm not sure if .wav will work or if you need to keep the .aif format... But they are located in:
System/Library/Components... Right-Click "CoreAudio.component" then click "Show Package Contents". Go into "Resources" then into "SystemSounds". There are a bunch on "System Sound" folders there... Find the sound file that you want to change... then drag it to the desktop (in case you need it later)... Place your file where the previous file was, ***Use the SAME name as the previous file*** Let us know if that works.

It's easy.

I found you get better results by having the sounds converted to .aiff. Once you've done that, simply drop the converted sound files in the Sounds folder.

The path is this:

Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Sounds

Tyhen, launch Mail.app, and in the preferences (can't verify the exact place in the pref, I'm at school and we use a stripped down Panther machine) you should see under one of the tabs a place that lets you choose the sound you want for incoming emails.

An easier way is to use Mail.app's own interface.
