Hi all,
I have the distinct pleasure of finally owning a mac, but i'm having trouble getting use to the OS. In window you can defrag and compress the files on the HD. Also you can delete cookies and temporary files. Do you have to do this manually on a mac or is it done automatically, or is it even necessary to do this?
Any inut would be gretly appreciated

your os automatically defrags files <20 mb. There is no real need to defrag. Yes, there will be some performance boosts if you do..but it is pretty negligible

I got this app that was recommended in Macworld Magazine called TechTool Pro. Check out their site, they have a couple other diagnostic/clean up apps for macs on there..

Hope you enjoy your switch, i switched about 4 months ago and i'm loving it!

At least once a month, or after you install a new program, you can repair permissions. This is a Unix thing, and can be easily done by going to the Disk Utility app, clicking on your Hard-Drive and then clicking "repair permissions."

Get yourself OnyX (http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html), a great system maintenance utility. The key thing to do is to run the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts on a regular basis. They will keep your Mac tuned to perfection.

There is no need to defrag, as pointed out above, and really, no need to repair permissions unless you are also using Mac OS Classic.

Run OnyX (or an app like it) on a regular basis, and use the features of whatever browser you like best to keep cookies and cache files under control and you will have a happy Mac (and a happy Mac owner!).
