Hello

Just got the iPad yesterday and I'm struggling a bit in trying to sync up with pdf and wmv files with PC machine (XP).

I've tried "Files" (free version) which sets up a network folder. This is fine except the actual reader isn't great. You can't skip thru the pdf very well...you can only scroll down page to page and if it's a large file that is a pain. I know there are a couple of good pdf readers but would they work with this networked drive sync set up? I'm sorry I'm pretty confused about this.

I also have a good number of lectures (meaning...not very high quality videos) I'd like to get over to the iPad. Any ideas?

I'm just not all that familiar with the iTunes interface. I've used with my iPod but have always really have had trouble with it in how it places the files. I seem to have to make dual copies of everything I sync. It can't seem to just sync from where I have the files originally on my drive.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Give the Goodreader ($0.99) app a try. It will at least help you get your pdfs on the iPad. There is a wireless method and a method using iTunes and the USB port of your PC. I am not aware of any apps that will sync the pdf files in the private (app specific) folders that Goodreader maintain(s) with those on your computer.

Your wmv problem could be due to their encoding format. Use Handbrake to re-encode them as m4v files. You can then drop these into the iPad using iTunes.

I've d/l'd Goodreader...I'll give it a try.

Also, I had never heard of Handbrake...I'll take a look.

Thanks for the info!

OK, I'm still trying to figure out how to get .wmv files over to the iPad. The "Video" app seems to just want you to buy vids from the store. How are people getting the files over to the iPad. I mean, literally how is it done regardless of any kind of conversion? Again...I'm not much of an expert in iTunes interface...

Thanks for any help you can give.

As mentioned by Fat Abe, video files have to be m4v format. Here is a Gizmodo article on converting videos. iPad Test Notes: Your Video - ipad - Gizmodo

Page 58 of the online pdf iPad manual has info on syncing once you get them in the correct format. I don't know if it's a different page in the actual paper manual that comes with the iPad. :)
