[QUOTE="MacInWin, post: 1693356"] So you will wait for the 2006 machine to fail totally before you are willing to move up? At that point you will have no machine and no experience and perhaps no clean path to upgrade! That doesn't seem very wise to me. Far better to make the move now, when at least you have a fallback system. Apple doesn't upgrade, you do. They merely make the upgrade/update available. Nobody forces the update, unlike Windows, who seem to apply updates every time I shut down the virtual machine. And actually, El Cap is very stable now. The ranting on the web is from people who didn't like how it works, but it works well and I've had no problems in my upgrading to it. And Photos (that's the name) is pretty close to what iPhoto was. Apple intends to deprecate iPhoto, so if you don't move to Photos soon, you will eventually find yourself abandoned there, too. Again, migrating while you have a fallback would seem to be the wiser approach. Nice rant. Personally I've never liked the "Apple is a religion" mantra. I don't worship Apple or Jobs or Cook, but I do admire what they produced and are producing to date. If they stop producing quality, I'll stop buying Apple. Don't know what I'll go to, because right now Apple is the best option for me, but if they slide to second best, I'll definitely make the move. Quality is more important than brand name for me. To the rest of the comment, I don't really know how to respond. I use my system to do graphics work with the Adobe suite, play music, email, some office work for my wife's business (accounting, spreadsheets and documents mostly, with the occasional presentation with both MS Office and the Apple productivity suite) and, of course, surf the web. I'm not disoriented by it at all. I'm 70 years old and seem to be able to keep up just fine. It's all in the attitude, I think. If you want to succeed, your chances are a lot better at actually doing it. At least for me, anyway. I chose to take out the DVD from my MacBookPro and put in an SSD. Didn't need it internal and can always use an external DVD if I really need to. I put the one that was inside in an enclosure, works just fine that way the once or twice a year I've needed it.
