I bought an IMAC G5 in November and fell in love straight away. I was assured it didn't freeze or crash and the silence would be wonderful. The honeymoon was great but now I want a divorce. I'm sitting here getting earache from the noise of the fans and waiting for the next freeze or the screen that tells me in so many languages that I must shut my system down. Been on to Mac, took it away for repair but was told it was a software problem as when they booted from their harddrive it was hunky dory. fair enough, cost me thirty pounds plus to find this out but whos software is causing the problem. when I tried to reinstall Panther it crashed half way through. It took me another three hours before I had a system again. will mac not admit there is either a problem with my Harddrive or operating system. Im really Peed off with mac so this is one unhappy switcher. :eek:neye:

Apple picked up my computer put a new logic board in it and now it's back to being as quiet as when it was new :spook:

ok well 1. its apple not mac.
2. your problem isn't software. It is a midplane problem which you need to get replaced.

Well, we can't tell anything to Apple. You'll have to do that yourself.

It might also be enlightening to run the Hardware Test suite (It's on one of the CDs or DVDs you got with the system.) If it fails, (or better yet, crashes while running) then Apple will be forced to listen to you.

I am not sure whom it was that assured you of this, but they are sadly mistaken. All computers and all OS'es are subject to and prone to freeze or crash. No computer or OS is perfect, and Mac OS is no exception. True they may freeze or crash less often, but they still crash and/or freeze.

Since you got your system back up and running, are you still experiencing these problems? Have you been keeping up with regular maintenance on your Mac (running scripts, repair permissions, etc)? Have you tried contacting Apple again if you are still having problems?

I don't know where you are located but here in Georgia (U.S.) we have the Lemon Law. The lemon law basically states If you have to get it fixed more than three times for the same problem thay have to replace the entire unit.

So I would keep complaining until they hear you out. Apple was very good about solving my roomates problem.

I am a new user to Mac and I'm not sure how to run scripts and repair permissions. I would be glad of some assistance here only every time I try something I seem to make it worse.

I had a few similar problems with mine early on, but I solved it by upgrading the RAM.

Mine (g5 1.8 single) came with 256mb, which isn't nearly enough. I put in another 1gb (which I got from crucial UK for about 40 quid I think), and it has been solid as a rock ever since.

That's the second mac i have `saved` from the dustbin by upgrading RAM.

Otherwise, I think consumer laws in the UK are not totally different to Georgia - if it really can't be solved then you should be able to at least get it replaced. A computer that doesn't work is 'unmerchantable' - just politely and firmly tell your dealer you want a new one or your money back. It's worth at least trying a new one - you'll never be unhappy with a good Mac! (use the word unmerchantable when you talk to them, it's the legal definition of a lemon).

Finally - did you buy it with a credit card? If you did you can do it through your c/card company - the companies don't broadcast the fact but to a large extent if you buy a lemon, you can make it their problem. Just call them, and explain what's going on.
