Yesterday a girl came to me with an unbootable MBP. She had been unable to download photos from her iPhone to the MBP for a few days. It seems the iTunes and iPhoto apps could not see her iPhone. So she changed USB ports with her iPhone still connected to the sync cable. As soon as she plugged it in the computer shut down and would not start up again. Her sync cable looked a bit frayed to me so I thought that might be the culprit. If so what damage may have been done and is it repairable?

Have you tried an SMC Reset?

Depending on the fray, she may have directed the power on the USB port into the data side. At that point almost anything might have happened.
